What this tool does

Measures how fast and accurately you type. Type the shown words as quickly and correctly as you can — your words per minute (WPM) and accuracy update live and lock in when you finish the last word.

Timed and scored entirely in your browser — nothing you type is sent anywhere, and the test resets when you leave the page.

How to use this tool

1Pick a test length — 25, 50, or 100 words.
2Click into the box and start typing. The timer starts on your first keystroke, not before.
3Correct characters stay neutral, mistakes turn red — keep going, you can't go back and fix an earlier word once you've passed it.
4Your WPM, accuracy, and time lock in the moment you complete the last word. Hit Restart for a fresh set.

How the score works, and what's a good one

WPM here is correctly-typed characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes elapsed — five characters is the standard definition of a “word” for typing tests, so a long word and a short word count proportionally. Incorrect characters don't count toward WPM at all, so accuracy and speed are measured together.

  • Around 40 WPM is the rough average for an adult typing normally.
  • 60–70 WPM is a comfortable touch-typing pace and enough for most office work.
  • 90+ WPM is fast; professional transcriptionists often work above 100.
  • Aim for 95%+ accuracy — below that, corrections cost you more time than the raw speed gains.

The fastest way to improve is to slow down until you can type without looking at the keyboard, keep your fingers on the home row, and let speed come back gradually. Short daily practice beats occasional long sessions.

FAQ

How is WPM calculated?
Correctly-typed characters divided by 5, divided by elapsed minutes. Only correct characters count, so a typo slows your score whether or not you notice it.
Why can't I fix a mistake in an earlier word?
Once you've typed past a character it's locked as correct or incorrect. This matches how most typing tests measure real accuracy, rather than letting you scroll back and clean up.
Why is pasting disabled?
Pasting would let you finish instantly with a perfect score. The point is to type the words.
Does the timer include the time before I start?
No. It starts on your first keystroke and stops on your last, so thinking time before you begin doesn't count.
Is my typing data saved anywhere?
No. Everything happens locally in your browser and is cleared when you leave the page — there's no history or account.
