Why caption length varies so much by platform

Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok all technically allow long captions (2,000+ characters), but every one of them truncates in the feed after a much shorter preview — you have to tap "more" to read the rest. X is the outlier: its 280-character limit is the hard cap itself, not just a truncation point.

Hashtags matter too — Instagram enforces a hard 30-tag limit, while the other platforms have no cap but clear diminishing returns well before you'd hit one.

How to use this tool

1Write your caption, hashtags and all, in the box above.
2The table updates instantly for Instagram, X, LinkedIn, and TikTok.
3Green means it's fully visible without a tap; amber means it'll get truncated in feed.
4Check the hashtag count against each platform's practical guidance, not just the hard limit.

Why the first line does the heavy lifting

  • Whatever's visible before "more" is what decides if someone reads on or scrolls past
  • Piling on hashtags past the useful range doesn't add reach — it just reads as spam
  • The same caption often needs a shorter cut for X even if the rest works everywhere else

FAQ

Should hashtags go in the caption or the first comment?
For Instagram, both work the same for discoverability — it's a style choice. Keeping them in the caption is simpler and avoids relying on a follow-up comment that could get missed or deleted.
Does more hashtags mean more reach?
Not past a point. Platforms' own guidance and creator data consistently point to 3–5 well-targeted tags outperforming a maxed-out list.
Why is TikTok's truncation point so short?
TikTok's caption area competes with on-screen UI for space, especially on smaller devices, so it clips earlier than Instagram or LinkedIn.
Does this tool store what I type?
No. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is sent to or saved on our servers.
